started in 1998 as a website project to explore the potential of the
Internet to expand connections and interactions beyond geographic limitations.
Mindwind Labs, founded in 2003, applies strategic technologies and business
planning to enable clients the ability to fully utilize the Internet
and information technologies. Mindwind Labs is based in Honolulu, Hawai`i
and provides consultative services to clients in Hawai`i, Asia and the
Pacific Islands.
Burt Lum is the principal of Mindwind Labs whose current projects
include work with a native Hawaiian health organization called Papa
Ola Lokahi and the Kaho`olawe Island Reserve Commission. Burt also provides
clients with business development, mentoring and strategic planning.
His focus has been in the area of leveraging technology in developing
countries in an effort to help bridge the digital divide. His work has
taken him to places like Fiji, Palau, Mongolia and the Marshall Islands.
With 25 years of experience in the technology field, Burt not only consults
with clients but also writes and teaches. He wrote a weekly column called
Bytemarks for the Honolulu Advertiser for six years from 1998 to 2004.
The column covered topics of interest ranging from the Internet culture,
innovative websites and technology trends. The column has since ended
but the writing continues online at bytemarks.blogspot.com.
Burt is also on the faculty of the University of Phoenix, teaching classes
in telecommunications, the Internet and business.
In
March 2004, Burt hosted the Bytemarks radio program on KORL 690AM called
Rough Take. The show featured
guests from the Hawai`i tech, Internet, arts, culture and music community.
The show aired weekly on KORL every Tuesday evening from 6pm-7pm and
ran from March to September 2004.
Prior
to starting Mindwind Labs, Burt founded NetEnterprise Inc. in 1998 and
served as its President and CEO from 1998 to 2003. NetEnterprise provides
network-related IT services from the NetEnterprise full service data
center in downtown Honolulu.
From 1980 to 1995 Burt was with GTE (now Verizon Hawaii) in technical
marketing and product management in support of advanced network services.
He also spent a year with the Maui High Performance Computing Center,
a 500+ node IBM massively parallel processor computing facility, as
a business development manager.
Burt Lum received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at the University
of Washington in 1978 and an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from
Stanford University in 1981.
